"Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that are modeled on the relationships found in natural ecologies." This results in very dense food production that requires very little maintenance once established. These techniques should make life considerably easier for a prepper looking to establish a long-term food garden.
Permaculture design courses typically run in the hundreds to thousand dollar range and are out of the reach of many people, especially in this economy. So here is a free online permaculture course provided by NC State. This won't take the place of a hands on permaculture course and the climate down there is different than New York State, but it's certainly a great start!

The Logo you used is from a permaculture group in my area. They do many great projects, but mainly support college students looking to find a "green" lifestyle. They are the ones who made fun of me when I sent a link to this website, and handed out mock posters at the next meeting I went to about watching zombie movies and talking about the end of the world. We do have many permaculture and community garden groups though that do teach skills about canning, rain barrels and soil preparation through the local Cornell cooperative extension office and they have made a big difference. Also the local Red Cross does disaster training preparedness, so it is a subject some take serious.
Thanks for doing such a great job on such a wide variety of subjects. I have enjoyed my read through.
